Lægehåndbogen
Lægehåndbogen (In English: Doctor’s Handbook) is an online medical encyclopedia aimed primarily at Danish General Practitioners and secondarily at other health care professionals. It contains approx. 2,500 medical articles about conditions, symptoms, treatments, and health and is illustrated with over 2,000 drawings, photos, x-rays, videos, and animations.
Update of content
Every article in Lægehåndbogen is written and revised by a Danish Specialist and a General Practitioner or other relevant health care professionals and is updated on a regular basis to make sure that the content is reliable and up to date. See the list of editors.
A secretariat and an editorial team based at the Danish Medical Association is in charge of daily administration.
Access to Lægehåndbogen
Lægehåndbogen is easily accessed through sundhed.dk - the National Danish eHealth Portal - or via Lægehåndbogen.dk. Lægehåndbogen is free of charge for everyone and requires no log-in.
Funding
Lægehåndbogen is a non-commercial, non-profit encyclopedia financed out of public funds. It is initiated and owned by the Danish Regions and the five regions.
Purpose
The overall ambition of Lægehåndbogen is to provide the General Practitioner with a clinical tool which is useful in his/hers busy working day. All information in Lægehåndbogen is presented in such a way that the amount of time it takes to get relevant information is minimal.
The purpose of Lægehåndbogen is to:
- Provide General Practitioners in Denmark qualified and reliable online health information
- Support the spread of new academic knowledge among health care professionals

About Patienthåndbogen
Easily understandable information
Patienthåndbogen (Patient's Handbook) is an online medical encyclopedia for patients and relatives and contains approx. 3000 articles and 2000 illustrations. Health information in Patienthåndbogen is communicated in a non-academic language and adjusted to the needs of non-professionals.
Interaction with Lægehåndbogen
Almost every condition described in Lægehåndbogen has a corresponding article in Patienthåndbogen aimed at citizens. Patient information can be approached via links in Lægehåndbogen. This allows health care professionals to easily access and print from Patienthåndbogen as a supplement when informing and advising patients and relatives about health-related issues.
Medical editors
All articles in Patienthåndbogen are written and regularly revised by the same Danish specialists and General Practitioners responsible for Lægehåndbogen’s content. This ensures same high quality and correspondence between health information in both encyclopedias.

About the Danish Medical Association
Objectives
The specific objectives of the Danish Medical Association, as stated in its statutes, is: to unite Danish doctors in order to protect the interests of the medical profession, and to serve as the body through which the influence of the medical profession may be exercised on general social issues in the best interest of health and the health care system.
Advisory body in medical questions
While the Danish Medical Association is a lobby organization for Danish doctors it is also recognized by the Parliament, the national health administration, the ministries, and the private sector as an expert and advisory body for the authorities in medical questions and is represented in a number of official committees and working parties. Nearly all Danish doctors are members of the Danish Medical Association.
About the Danish Regions
Five regional governments
The Danish regions are the 5 regional governments under the Danish Government. The tasks of the regions include health care, operation of social and special education institutions, and regional development. The regions are responsible for the entire hospital service, including mental health treatment and health insurance.
